These grouse are a reminder of my childhood. Growing up in the NW I would often hear them thumping their wings during the breeding season. So fast they can fly! What wonders of nature they are. So many things to discover in the quiet woods. Therapy for the soul.
Grouse chicks are precocial, which means born in an advanced state. As soon as they've hatched and dried, they begin feeding themselves. They begin flying when about 5 days old, and look a bit like giant bumble bees!
