I will never forget many of my encounters with wildlife along the Mountain Trails I've hiked. This big moose was a mere stone toss away just behind this stand of trees. We saw each other, but fortunately, he was in velvet so he was unlikely to charge.
Moose antlers are deciduous. That is, the bull moose sheds and regrows his massive antlers each year. Made of bone and covered in a soft skin called velvet, these antlers can grow as much as 6 inches a week, and span nearly 6 feet from tip to tip! Before mating season around September, bulls shed the velvet skin leaving only exposed bone.
